Patent
What is a Patent?
A patent is an exclusive intellectual property right granted for an invention which provides the patent holder with the right to prevent others from making, using, selling or importing the patented invention without authorization.
In Morocco, patent protection is granted for a maximum duration of twenty (20) years from the filing date, subject to payment of annual maintenance fees.
Patent applications are administered by the OMPIC.

Patents represent a key strategic asset for companies operating in technology, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and engineering sectors.
Requirements for Patent Protection
In order to be patentable, an invention must satisfy three fundamental criteria:
novelty
inventive step
industrial applicability
These criteria are aligned with international standards established under the TRIPS Agreement and widely recognized in global patent practice.
Assessing whether an invention meets these criteria often requires specialized technical and legal analysis prior to filing.
International Patent Protection
Companies seeking patent protection in multiple jurisdictions may use the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system administered by WIPO.
The PCT system enables applicants to file a single international patent application, which provides an initial centralized procedure before entering national phases in selected jurisdictions.
